Freshfonts


The Freshfonts project has commenced after Autobahn was invitated to do a Pecha Kucha presentation. Such opportunities are mostly used to give a short portfolio presentation. Autobahn decided to set up a new project and do a talk about that. The limited amount of time was the stimulus for thinking and acting completely creative and free.

During a creative session the writing-with-tools-that-are-not-supposed-to-write-with began. Various materials were explored. All kinds of treatments were performed. And a whole series of words, sentences and statements wereput to the test.

The original idea was to generate a less legible font using gravity. Toothpaste, tomato ketchup and hair gel turned out to be the best resources. These materials determined the shapes, and with that the character of the letters. Because of its neutral appearance, the Helvetica was used as a blueprint. The fonts Heldentica*, Tomatica* and Gelvetica* were the result.

After the Pecha Kucha presentation the Freshfont project generated a lot of buzz, thanks to dozens of blogs. It was suggested the project was a tribute to Helvetica, which happened to exist for 50 years by that time.
